ROSEVILLE, Calif., September 10, 2014 – Intel-GE Care Innovations™, a pioneer in connecting the care continuum to the home, in partnership with MIT Hacking Medicine and StartX, will host its first ever hackathon aimed at creating more effective and reliable connections between patients, clinicians, and the information that can improve the quality and cost efficiency of healthcare. The event will be hosted on Stanford University’s campus September 19-21 and will feature keynote addresses by health innovation experts Dr. Jacob Reider, Deputy National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, and Dr. Lyle Berkowitz, Associate Chief Medical Officer of Innovation at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, experienced in innovative and disruptive uses of information technology.
The divide between patients and their health and healthcare providers obstructs the effort to improve the quality and cost efficiency of healthcare. Though technology and information are pervasive, connections that create lasting behavioral changes and more informed clinical care are inadequate. The CI Patient Engagement Hackfest will bring together entrepreneurs, physicians, designers, developers, and scientists to tackle these challenges. Over two intense days, teams will develop ideas for the next generation of solutions to help clinicians and other healthcare providers design and implement successful population health problems.

Hackers will work to find answers in two categories. First, in motivating, educating and driving patient behavior change in areas where individuals commonly struggle. Second, developing tangible solutions for obtaining consistent, reliable health and behavioral data from the home, which has largely been an untapped frontier in the land of healthcare information and delivery. Today, most clinicians have a limited or inaccurate view of the daily lives of their patients, which inhibits the advancement of effective, cost-efficient care.
The ideas generated at the hackathon will serve as building blocks to help MIT Hacking Medicine, StartX, and Intel-GE Care Innovations advance care, strengthen the connection – with informed and actionable insights – between providers, payers, caregivers and consumers, and bring the care continuum to the home.
